Re: Good News for Pensioners in 2006 Federal Budget
Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has tabled the first Conservative Government Budget today in the House of Commons. We are pleased to note that pension matters, perhaps unexpectedly, are given high priority by this Government. In particular, work initiated last year by the Department of Finance under the previous Liberal Government to examine the funding of private defined benefit pension plans has resulted in significant temporary measures that are announced in Budget 2006.

Most of the media commentary on Canada's defined benefit pension funding crisis has blamed low interest rates, poor investment market returns, government regulation and the courts for the problem. Heath's National Pension Practice Leader, Greg Hurst, takes a different view, as presented in his article in the February 2006 issue of Benefits and Pensions Monitor magazine.
